Career Counseling – How many sessions?
One thing you might be wondering is, “how long will career counseling take?” Some counselors sell a package of 5 meetings, some leave it open-ended. As a counselor, I make sure you are in charge of your treatment, and that includes the duration of it.
In general, how long it takes depends on many factors, such as whether you’ve decided on the change you want and how much time you spend between sessions doing additional research. But however you operate, we can work with that.
Just to get an idea of how long it might take for some people:
A specific situation like mock interviews or updating your resume might take 2-4 sessions.
Searching for and switching to a new job could take 6-8 sessions.
If you’re not sure what career you want, but you know you want it to be different, it might take 6-12 meetings.
Sometimes career counseling turns into long-term general mental health and existential counseling. In that case, it’s not unusual for clients to come in for 20+ sessions.
A key part of the work we’ll do together is checking in about how our progress is going. If you feel like you’re wasting your time, let’s figure out how we can better direct our energy. If you feel like we’re moving too fast, let me know.
If this approach sounds good to you, let’s get started.
